The Revelation of the Mystery

THE REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY

In his epistles, the apostle Paul speaks of the mystery. He defines the mystery in his letter to the Romans:

Romans 16:25-27

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my GOSPEL and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to THE REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY which was kept SECRET FOR LONG AGES but is now disclosed and through the PROPHETIC WRITINGS is made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith - to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Paul associates the mystery with the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation which was kept secret. He says that the mystery was kept secret for long ages; and it has been revealed through the prophetic writings, that is, the:

Old Testament scriptures:

Daniel 2:28, 47

But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;

The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldst reveal this secret.

Deuteronomy 29:29

The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Psalms 25:14

The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.

Proverbs 3:32

For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.

Amos 3:7

Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. In what manner has the mystery been revealed, and to whom has it been revealed? Paul speaks again of the mystery in his letter to the Ephesians:

Ephesians 3:3-5

... how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I wrote before in a few words, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets ...

The mystery has been made known not only to Paul, but also to the apostles and prophets of the early church. The mystery has been revealed by the Spirit; and it is by the Spirit that the apostles and prophets receive an enlightened understanding of the Old Testament scriptures.

1 Corinthians 2:7

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

2 Corinthians 3:18

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 4:1-6

Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

The mystery is also revealed to the saints by the Spirit, through the teaching of the apostles and prophets: Christ: the Source of Wisdom and Knowledge

Psalms 51:6

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Colossians 2:1-3

For I want you to know how greatly I strive for you, and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in love, to have all the riches of assured understanding and the knowledge of God's MYSTERY, of Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

In my opinion, Paul here refers to a scripture in the book of Isaiah:

Isaiah 45:3

I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.

This Old Testament scripture seems to fit the sense of Colossians 2:3, and Paul may very well have had this particular passage in mind when he wrote his letter to the Colossians.

God was Manifested in the Flesh

1Timothy 3:16

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.

Paul here speaks about Jesus, and explains that He was God manifested in the flesh. This fundamental truth can also be found in John's gospel:

John 1:14, 16-17

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. ... And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

This aspect of the mystery -- God was manifested in the flesh -- was foretold by the prophet Isaiah, as quoted in the gospel of Matthew 1:23.

'Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel', which is translated, 'God with us.' [Isaiah 7:14]

Psalms 51:6

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
